Unefon (Mexico)

Unefon, S.A. de C.V., commonly known as Unefon, is a Mexican-based telecommunications provider owned by Grupo Iusacell, the third largest communications company in the country. Headquartered in the Federal District, Unefon provides 100% digital mobile coverage in major cities in Mexico, supporting voice, messaging, data, roaming, and long-distance services through its prepaid and postpaid tariffs and plans.

Unefon was founded in 1997 by Grupo Salinas as a mobile network operator geared for the middle- and lower-class subscriber market. Its first base stations were predominantly CDMA-based, and with the network’s initial coverage came one of the most affordable rates for calls to major destinations in the country. In 1999, Unefon and the Canadian-based Nortel agreed on the latter’s provision of network infrastructures, primarily fixed-line base stations across the country.

In 2007, Unefon merged with Iusacell, another network operator owned by Grupo Salinas, resulting in the merger of the networks’ consumer base, which numbered to about 3.4 million. In 2009, however, the two brands separated as distinct service providers while still having Grupo Salinas as their parent company. The two brands have continued to implement improved technologies to enhance their stronghold in the national mobile market.

Since 2010, Unefon has started incorporating GSM technologies in addition to its already existing CDMA and analog infrastructures. Such expansion marks Iusacell’s and Unefon’s efforts to unify their services to build a stronger name in the midst of Mexico’s competitive mobile market. To date, Unefon has rolled-out 3G coverage in the states of Morelos, Jalisco, N`uevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and major areas in Baja California, among many others.
